Than Kyaw Htay has always been concerned with the living conditions in the villages of the Arakan state where he was born. These villages are successively affected by dryness and then flooding during the monsoon season. His childhood memories revolve around the quest for water during the hottest months, when the reservoirs are dry and when it takes several hours to walk to next point of water.

Than Kyaw Htay has always been concerned with the living conditions in the villages of the Arakan state where he was born. These villages are successively affected by dryness and then flooding during the monsoon season. His childhood memories revolve around the quest for water during the hottest months, when the reservoirs are dry and when it takes several hours to walk to next point of water.

The series "Silent Sweat" reflects the tension and difficulty of the women and children in charge of the water supply. The characters in his paintings are tiny, showing that they feel small and powerless in the face of a fundamental problem for their survival. The decoration of all these paintings consists of the magnificent temples of Mrauk Oo. Than Kyaw Htay blurred their contours to make tangible his sadness at seeing the heritage and history of the Rakhine evaporate, due to the misdeeds of time and the lack of maintenance.

In a more recent series, Than Kyaw Htay represents migrants from Arakan state. Villagers leaving their villages, balls on their heads, children by hand, in endless parades officially to seek better living conditions. But how can we avoid to think of the deportees from Burma, those with taboo names, the Rohingya in Myanmar....
