We've all heard of Ndary Lo's standing women and women in high heels, but we've never heard of a reclining woman... and even less of a mermaid. Like many of Ndary Lo's statues, this one has been installed in the Sorgue river, right in the heart of the town of Isle sur la Sorgue. But its story has many twists and turns. Initially, Ndary Lo had depicted a woman lying down, like "I'm sunbathing on the beach". This bather was painted in bright colours.
In 2012, Ndary Lo transformed her legs and gave her a flipper. The artist's motives remain a mystery. But this exceptional piece is truly beautiful. For more information, contact Frédéric at the Retour De Voyage gallery, which is showing an exhibition of some twenty works by Ndary Lo until the end of October 2024, including this mermaid and the tall walkers along the Sorgue.
