Like most of Ndary Lo's work, this sumptuous statue was made in 2014 from welded concrete irons.
What was Ndary Lo's intention in sculpting these pregnant women? Sylvain Sankalé, consultant collector and art critic, sees them as an evocation of multiple pregnancies and the misery they bring to so many women around the world. This could be the case for the pregnant women in the 'Ultrasound' series, for which Ndary Lo had collected soiled and damaged celluloid doll heads from rubbish dumps and stuck them in the women's deformed bellies. But as far as this particular statue is concerned, Retour De Voyage sees in it the pride of a beautiful woman, rejoicing in giving birth. Although Ndary Lo has always remained discreet about his personal life, this statue seems to remind us of his paternity.
One of Retour De Voyage’s favorite.
