Sculpture in concrete iron - Height 250 cm
Tree with human antlers
The artist, sensitive to nature and its destruction, has designed an installation that echoes the political project of the "Great Green Wall". This project consists of blocking the advance of the Sahel desert with a vegetal barrier that would cross Africa from Senegal to the Red Sea. Thus, Ndary Lo created a forest of trees of different sizes and dimensions out of concrete reinforcing iron, his favourite material. The branches of this masterful series end in hands. Free of all gravity, these vertical iron impulses spring towards deliverance. The vertical tension only amplifies the feeling of a spiritual quest. It must also be said that the hands are loaded with symbolism, one can wonder what they express: prayer, imploration, devotion, claim, fight, challenge? These unusual trees, signals of hope, are also political. The artist wanted Senegal, and more broadly Africa, to take flight on the road to economic and political independence. "I always try to make sure that my work gives rise to hope," he said.
An internationally recognised Senegalese artist, he defines himself as a sculptor. His key words: Recover, Reuse, Reconvert, Restore. His ethics are in line with his aesthetics and he considers Recuperation, an exclusive recourse to already used objects, as an ideology. Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française, he has received several awards and distinctions, including the Léopold Sédar Senghor Grand Prize of the Dakar Biennale in 2002 and 2008.
