This photograph was taken by Hans Silvester in the early 1960s when he spent more than 6 months with the Gypsies and continued to deepen his knowledge of this culture through his travels in the Balkans. Retour De Voyage selected this photograph for the strength of this "character". It is part of the images of Hans Silvester who presents us men and women who marked their time by the singularity of their life. This man could have illustrated Guillaume Apollinaire’s poem with this iconic image showing his muscles and strength. A symbol of the search for freedom, he suggests that he is not chained and that even the strongest chains will not deprive him of his freedom.
