Rimini – Silver gelatin print by Hans Silvester, 60’s.

This photograph, taken in Italy during the early years of Hans Silvester’s career, belongs to the founding body of work presented in the Silver Silvester collection.

Why this photograph?

Taken from above, this photograph offers an almost abstract vision of a lively beach. Seen from a great height, the bathers become a multitude of small dark silhouettes scattered across the wet sand. Bodies turn into signs, dots, sometimes elongated shadows, sometimes denser clusters. Individually, each figure is barely identifiable; collectively, they form a vibrant human pattern.

The sea enters the image through a bright, curving line, where white foam sharply contrasts with the gray sand. This wave draws a shifting boundary between two spaces: water and land. Silhouettes gather along this threshold, some already in the water, others still hesitating.

The composition rests on a strong contrast between natural order and apparent disorder: the regular curve of the wave opposes the seemingly random dispersion of human figures. Yet a rhythm emerges, almost musical, built from repetitions, distances, and groupings.

In Hans Silvester’s work, the viewpoint is often that of a detached witness. Here, the elevated perspective erases anecdote to reveal an almost universal vision: humanity reduced to a fragile crowd, tiny in the face of the vastness of the sea. The scene is alive, yet permeated by a strange stillness, as if collective movement were momentarily frozen under the photographer’s gaze.

Printed from the artist’s preserved black-and-white negatives, the image was produced using traditional silver gelatin processes. The depth of the blacks, the fineness of the grain, and the balance of contrasts give it a strong material presence, faithful to the photographer’s original intent. This photograph bears witness to Hans Silvester’s attentive and rigorous eye, shaped by a humanist approach.

Each photograph is printed in a strictly limited edition of five copies. The works are stored and handled in accordance with photographic conservation standards, ensuring their long-term stability.
