Why this photograph?

This New Orleans jazz musician—an iconic image captured in 1965—perfectly embodies the art of Hans Silvester. The gaze of the man in the hat reveals the deep sense of trust the photographer was able to establish with his “subject.” It is through a patiently built relationship, in which time spent together is a fundamental element, that the photographer conveys to us the full depth of this sincere gaze.

Printed from the artist’s preserved black-and-white negatives, the image was produced using traditional silver gelatin processes. The depth of the blacks, the fineness of the grain, and the balance of contrasts give it a strong material presence, faithful to the photographer’s original intent. This photograph bears witness to Hans Silvester’s attentive and rigorous eye, shaped by a humanist approach.

Each photograph is printed in a strictly limited edition of five copies.
