Burma - Medicine Box
This very special box is coming from Burma, and is called "medicine box" as it was used to store herbs, spices and medicine. The Box is red and gold lacquered and is topped with 13 finely carved statues featuring 13 "nats" (spirits of nature).
The piece is crafted from wood and bamboo then coated in lacquer and gold gilt. The delicacy of the gilt work, excellent condition and overall style of the piece is very unusual and wonderful to behold. A truly wonderful and extremely rare piece.

This very special box is coming from Burma, and is called "medicine box" as it was used to store herbs, spices and medicine. The Box is red and gold lacquered and is topped with 13 finely carved statues featuring 13 "nats".
The medicine box is compromised of 13 compartments – a larger central and twelve smaller outer compartments. The central compartment is covered by a gilded sitting monk – the height denoting the boxes obvious use on special occasions. Each of the smaller outer compartments are topped by an individual Nat spirit. Each is unique, gilt coated and individual. The outer compartments of the piece are also decorated in a gold gilt mural depicting traditional Burmese spirits.
The twelve small carved Nat figures can be removed to reveal a hollow tube, used to store herbs, spices and medicine. The larger central spire can also be removed to reveal an additional storage compartment. Note - Some of the twelve figures hold a delicate fan or stick. Each of these are complete with no damage.
