Ngbaka masks are rare; they were used during initiation and circumcision rites. They often carry linear incisions on the nose indicating the scarifications in use in the ethnic group, the mouth is filled with small teeth.
A tribe on the left bank of the Ubangui, the Ngbaka practice agriculture. They are organized into tribes without political unity, under the tutelage of the Wan chief and worship a god named Gale through the worship of the spirits of nature. The young people are prepared for adult life following the initiatory rituals called "gaza" and formed by former initiates, the bugaza. Their statues generally represent the primordial ancestors Setu and his sister Nabo and are installed on altars for propitiatory rites.
