The Mbuti Pygmies live in the north of the present Democratic Republic of Congo, in the equatorial forest, in communion with the still virgin nature. They have always been accustomed to recovering the internal part of the bark of ficus trees, called liber, whose texture and colour vary according to the variety of species. These barks, long beaten and stretched, are then used to make loincloths: the Marumbas, or Tapas. These loinclothes are decorated by women who transform these garments into real works of art through their drawings with soft and spontaneous lines with strong spiritual inspiration. The constantly changing patterns carry messages and express a great artistic freedom to dress the Mbuti during the festivals and rites of passage.
