Terracotta made by the Falashas, Jews from Ethiopia who arrived in Ethiopia during the ‘flight to Egypt’ at the beginning of our era. The source of inspiration for these statuettes is deeply rooted in the culture of the people of Israel.
From a private collection
Statuette made by the Falashas, Ethiopian Jews who settled in Ethiopia at the beginning of our era in the north of the country, in the Gondar region.
The beauty and emotion that emanate from these terracottas are linked to the skills of the Falashas women. They developed their art alongside the men, who were renowned for their manual skills in making clay tools.
This female representation with a slightly flared braided hairstyle is relatively common in collections. They most certainly originally had a votive function.
There are very few Falashas left in Ethiopia, since a large-scale repatriation was organized by Israel in the 1980s.
