Traditional chest, rare item
Dimensions: width 15 inches, depth 10.7 inches, height 7 inches
Small Burmese chest in black lacquer, decorated with delicate gold motifs representing strange and fascinating characters: their human heads are replaced either by animal heads or by symbols reminiscent of the signs of a lunar calendar. This refined and mysterious decoration is part of the Burmese craft tradition, where lacquer is worked with patience and virtuosity.
The interior, made of carved teak, reveals an ingenious layout: a series of drawers and small compartments designed to hold jewelry, documents, or precious objects. When opened, the lid reveals a veritable miniature work of goldsmithing: in the center is a set mirror, surrounded by floral motifs delicately cut from colored paper and placed behind thin protective glass panels, like so many secret gardens. A cross between a piece of furniture and a curiosity, this chest combines functionality, refinement, and symbolic imagery, a rare testament to Burmese craftsmanship and the richness of its traditional iconography.
