Punu statuette, Gabon - Wood - Height 19 cm
Early 20th century - From private collection, Paris.
This statuette was collected by Lieutenant Fernand Mallet between 1921 and 1922.
The Punu settled in south-west Gabon and Congo following conflicts with their Fang neighbors. Punu art objects are linked to funeral rituals, initiation rites in Mukudji society, and magical rites during which dancers display accessories.
A protective object, this statuette probably featured a small ventral charge, inserted into the cavity, intended to reinforce its power. African Punu statues are dedicated to ancestor worship, healing or divination rites. Retour De Voyage appreciates this beautiful piece of primitive art and is proud to present it for sale.
We love this statue which takes a nice place into the whole collection.
