Here is a fairytale elephant… in blue. Seated cross-legged like a yogi, it folds its arms and legs with graceful calm while gazing peacefully toward the horizon. Its unusual deep-blue colour gives the sculpture an otherworldly aura.

The Blue Elephant surprises through both its colour and its almost human attitude.
Its rounded forms and glazed surface evoke the gentleness of sacred elephants, while the large eyes and clasped hands suggest meditation. Ruta Jusionyte’s sculpting process, built upward from the feet to the head, gives the figure a grounded stability and a gaze opened onto an imaginary world. The absence of accessories allows the material itself to speak, giving the posture its full expressive strength.
Jusionyte places this pachyderm within her poetic universe where animals become the equals of human beings. In her reflections on love and myth, she suggests that ancient stories portray animals as creatures endowed with emotions and thoughts. The choice of blue evokes dreams and wisdom; with subtle humour, the artist transforms the elephant into a benevolent guru. As often in her work, a faint smile brightens the creature’s face and invites the viewer to share this suspended moment of serenity.
Over the years, Ruta Jusionyte has developed an immediately recognisable body of work at the crossroads of Neo-Expressionism, Symbolist Romanticism, and Magical Realism. Born in Lithuania in 1978, she now lives and works in France and has established herself as a significant figure on the contemporary European art scene, blending expressionist intensity with symbolic romanticism.
Her work explores the relationships between humans and animals. Her hybrid sculptures reveal a fascination with fragility and strength, innocence and bestiality, always infused with a discreet touch of irony.
Winner of the Académie des Beaux-Arts Prize in 2019, Ruta Jusionyte is now highly sought after by collectors drawn to deeply embodied painting and sculpture, where emotion and visual intensity meet.
