This buffalo head is a real eye-catcher! It's impressive and dazzling!
It comes from Burma and has an incredible history that gives it a very special aura. It is carved from a teak base, covered with gold paint and adorned with real bull horns. Mirror shards have also been used to highlight the eyes and teeth (because this sculpture is so full of detail that it needs to be examined from every angle!). As striking as its appearance, the history of this object attests to its rarity. This rare and unique piece combines animal power with exceptional craftsmanship. This buffalo head has realistic features, where the noble and massive expression of the animal is combined with the symbolic brilliance of gold.
The horns, which are real and carefully attached, give the piece an organic and ritualistic dimension. They recall the vital force of the animal, revered in many Burmese traditions as a symbol of fertility, protection, and prosperity. The gold ornamentation suggests a decorative use: this type of object could adorn altars, be placed in temples, or serve as a protective talisman in homes.
Both an art object and an ethnographic artifact, this buffalo head embodies the richness of traditional Burmese craftsmanship and the deep connection between humans, animals, and the sacred.
From 1886 to 1937, Burma was part of the British Raj (comprising British India and the princely states), then became a separate British colony from 1937 onwards. It was during this period that the British governor commissioned six sculptures from Burmese artisans, including this bull's head, to decorate his palace. During the junta, the palace was looted and this bull was removed from the comfort of its palace. Scattered across the four corners of the world, you have before you one of the rare examples of these magnificent objects.
Retour De Voyage is proud to present this incredible piece, which bears witness to the history of Myanmar, a country dear to our hearts. The finesse of the details, the artistry, the quality of the materials, and the symbolism of this piece make it truly exceptional.
