Burmese Buddhist art follows Theravada, a branch of Buddhism that is mainly spread in South Asia and for which Myanmar is the mainland headquarters. In this relatively conservative branch of Buddhism, there are a small number of sacred figures.
The craftsman used the lost wax technique to make this crowned Buddha. This technique is used for the realization of unique pieces. The wax serves as a mold and with the firing, it will flow, leaving the injected bronze to freeze. Then follows a meticulous work to polish and patinate. These figures of art most often adorn pagodas. This one is a medicine Buddha, cross-legged on a lotus flower, with an arura plant seed in his hands and a lotus in a bowl. He is also crowned with the 7 branches, representing the 7 purities of the Therevada Buddhist religion.
Retour De Voyage has chosen this statue from Myanmar, and more precisely from the Shan State.
