Than Kyaw Htay

Artist Than Kyaw Htay

Than Kyaw Htay is a painter born in Myanmar, in Sittwe in 1978 who studied at the Yangon School of Fine Arts. He is a full time artist, leaving on the outskirts of Yangon where he has a magnificent workshop.

Originally from the state of Arakan, he was very early concerned by the living conditions in the villages which throughout the year are successively victims of drought and then floods during the monsoon. His childhood memories are focused on the quest for water during the hottest months, when the reservoirs were dry and it took several miles to reach the only well in the village.

The series "Silent Sweat" reflects the tension and difficulty of the women and children in charge of the water supply. The characters in his paintings are tiny, showing that they feel small and powerless in the face of a fundamental problem for their survival. The decoration of all these paintings consists of the magnificent temples of Mrauk Oo. Than Kyaw Htay blurred their contours to make tangible his sadness at seeing the heritage and history of the Rakhine evaporate, due to the misdeeds of time and the lack of maintenance.

In a more recent series, Than Kyaw Htay represents migrants from Arakan state. Villagers leaving their villages, balls on their heads, children by hand, in endless parades officially to seek better living conditions. But how can we avoid to think of the deportees from Burma, those with taboo names, the Rohingya in Myanmar....
